Located in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, Portsmouth Campground is on the northwest shore of Portsmouth Mine Lake. (Portsmouth is Minnesota’s deepest inland lake at 450 feet deep.)
Open in the Spring, Summer, and Fall seasons for Cuyuna camping.
It has 18 electric sites and 15 non-electric sites, plus a group camp. Portsmouth is not open in the winter.
This is ride-in, ride-out, but not private, except for a few campsites. This is the only place you can reserve a group campsite, which is unique. Book online for all Portsmouth Campground sites via the DNR website (link below) or there will be no vacancies when you arrive.
And as a bit of local knowledge, there is a waste-water treatment plant north of the campground, so if the wind blows to the south, it’s not the best experience. We’d recommend booking at True North Basecamp first, but if that is full, then Portsmouth is a great choice for camping near Crosby, MN. Keep in mind, Portsmouth is not a state-park experience (it won’t have Itasca State Park’s amenities, for example). This is a recreation-area experience. It’s why the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is designated as a recreation area and not a state park.
