The Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails will OPEN for the summer season on Saturday morning, April 13!
Fatbikes are suggested to help pack the trails and prevent rutting in the occasional muddy spot but they are not required.
There will be a few trails that will remain closed while they continue to dry out and firm up. Please stay off any trails that are taped off in order to prevent damaging the trail surface. The MN DNR and Crew Volunteers will continue to monitor those trails and will open them up as they are ready. At this point it looks like the following trails will remain closed: Cruser’s Kettle east of Cuyuna, Bison Run and Dynamite at Sagamore, Backcountry, Sinter, Sledgehammer and Portal of Mahnomen North. The short new segment of Galloping Goose that parallels the overburden road near county 128 (use the overburden road instead for 1/3mile), and a small segment of lower Bobsled at Yawkey will remain closed. You can connect to the Bobsled climb and downhill by using the Cuyuna Connector Return. All closed trails are clearly marked with yellow tape.

Sun! Took to Miner’s Mountain road to the top to check out the @ninerbikes MCR climbing prowess. Well, let’s just say I’ve pedaled swifter drop bar bikes up hill, but none of them had rear suspension for the descent. (And I’m by no means light myself). What I like about climbing is the eventual descending. Which the downhill was even nicer than normal courtesy of @foxmtb Transfer seat post and a perfectly placed, in the drops @wolf_tooth_comp ReMote drop bar lever. Right where you want it when you need it. The 31 tooth small ring in the @shimanogravel GRX drivetrain was pushing my legs to get stronger versus just spinning to win. Had to fight a bit for it, but it was a good fight, the kind that makes a person stronger the next time you climb. Looking down at the bike, it reads: “Pedal. Damnit!” which is what I did. On the way home I found some washboard gravel and hit it full speed. The ride, seriously butter smooth. That made me smile. Big, wide, grin for what’s coming next. Dry dirt dry. Let’s go!

Inaugural spin on the new @ninerbikes MCR (Magic Carpet Ride). For the first half of the ride we hit the decayed pavement and washboard gravel. Second half we rode the fully clear and ready to ride Cuyuna Lakes State Paved Trail. Thoughts on the MCR ride? Was it magic? Way too early to tell! (We can say the @shimanogravel GRX is buttery smooth.) Much more to follow in the coming days, weeks, and months.
