Red Rider’s Resort Campground consists of 4 RV and 10 tent campsites for your next Cuyuna camping trip! Located 1.5 miles north of downtown Crosby, MN on HWY 31, Red Rider is surrounded by a pine forest on the hillside of the former Manuel Open Pit Mine, now the Manuel Mine Lake (160-foot depth). Local owners, Teffany and Vern Lewis, purposefully constructed their tent sites to be a part of the forest, while still providing many overnight campsites to choose from. Camping here gives you ride in/ride out to the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area mountain bike trails.
Each tent site comes complete with a picnic table, fire ring, charcoal grill, wi-fi, and a shared shower-house bathroom and kitchen. Just a short walking distance from the campsites, the kitchen is equipped with a cooktop/stove, pizza oven, and toaster. The tent sites vary, depending on their forest settings and lake views. Of note, campsite #9 features a ginormous culvert from the mining era, and campsite #10 offers a hike-in, hike-out edge of overburden cliff view.
(Not recommended for children, but it provides privacy and serenity to the right audience.) Also, the trail leading to the #10 campsite is not mountain bikeable, due to a stairway for the final climb up to the campsite.
A total of 4 RV sites (accommodating campers ranging in size from 20′ to 28′) provide a more open experience for adventurers who would prefer to stay in their home on wheels while camping in Cuyuna. Special note, there are no hook ups with these RV sites.
A vault toilet is adjacent to the RV campsites. Red Rider Resort is ride-in, ride-out to the Yawkey Unit of mountain biking trails. That’s perfect in our books. And we call it the “Stairway to Heaven”—a beautiful, wood stairway is crafted into the hillside of Manuel Mine Lake and it goes right down to the water. From atop the floating dock, you’ll be able to see into the crystal-clear water and view sunfish and rainbow trout (depending on the season). Lifejackets are highly recommended for all water use, as this is an open pit now filled with water, so the shoreline drop-off is much steeper than a natural Minnesota lake.
Pets can enjoy camping in Cuyuna, too! Red Rider Resort accepts pets with a maximum of two dogs per cabin. Pets must be kenneled (within the RV or tent) when not supervised (providing your pet is not a barker when left alone). Pets must be leashed when outside with owner. Pets must be picked up after on the resort and campgrounds. Currently, Red Rider Resort does not charge an extra pet fee.
You have the ability to purchase firewood at the time of your online reservation. (Purchase it!)
