Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Trails

Savanna Portage State Park

Just under an hour drive to our northeast, groomed classic-style cross-country ski trails and backcountry snowshoe adventures await at Savanna Portage State Park (just over 55 miles from the Yurts at Yawkey).

Savanna Portage State Park offers 13k of classic-style groomed cross-country skiing trails through rolling hills, wooded forests, and in some places, steep terrain. Trails are rated easy to difficult, so there is something for everyone.

Snowshoers may explore any area of the park (all 16,000 acres!) for a true backcountry adventure (though you must stay off the groomed ski and snowmobile trails).

The park also offers ungroomed, packed areas that can be used for snowshoeing or winter hiking—including a nearly two-mile ungroomed fat bike trail around Lake Shumway.

Know before you go:

  • Groomed cross-country ski trails (classic only)
  • Easy, moderate, and difficult trails
  • A State Park vehicle permit is required and can be purchased online or at the self-service kiosk in the park
  • A Great Minnesota Ski Pass is required for those ages 16+. Passes are available online and wherever DNR permits and licenses are sold.
  • Dogs are welcome on snowshoe trails (as long as they’re leashed) but are not allowed on groomed ski trails
  • Fat biking allowed on Lake Shumway trail, only
  • Check the trail conditions, here
